Today, in response to the vision first expressed in A Vision for Youth Ministry as: “Youth Ministry is the response of the Christian community to the needs of young people, and the sharing of the unique gifts of youth with the larger community” the Church is actively employing ways to respond to the needs of young people and involve young people-with their gifts and energy-in the life of the community. Pope John Paul II inspiring words at World Youth Day 1995 serve as our call and motivation to live out this vision in our community today. “What is needed today is a Church which knows how to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and, through his body which is the Church, to propose the possibility of a choice which will require a commitment of their lives. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the Church must become today the traveling companion of young people.” Renewing the Vision, the 1997 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops document, empowers those traveling companions—today’s Church, by providing three essential goals which serve as the framework for ministry with adolescents. Goal 1: To empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today. Goal 2: To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community. Goal 3: To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. May we walk the road together to serve and minister for and with the youth of our community! |
