20080107 Baptistry Brainstorm Comments

November 2007
ALEC began studying the Book of Tobit and learned that the statue of St Raphael and Tobias had been moved to the Sanctuary from the school.  Members reviewed early intentions for space usage.

October 2007
Photos and comments of church art were presented (full notes and photos in ALEC binder)

  • Our Stations need highlighting
  • Effective contrasting colors in niches at St Michael and St Mary
  • Prepare a brochure similar to those provided at St Stephen and Duke Chapel
  • Existing Mary and Sacred Heart statues need a better setting
  • St Stephen has inspiring stained glass; classical stained glass (Sacred Heart, St Thomas More) may not fit St Raphael; solid color and abstract glass (Holy Name Cathedral Chicago) is not inspiring
  • Ambry for Holy Oils needs beautification
  • Indoor meditative areas at Immaculate Conception and St Francis are effective
  • Chapel of Reservation could be emphasized more
  • Good use of mosaic over marble (Sacred Heart); possible mosaic over brick at St Raphael
  • Outside areas: St Luke-Mass area, Avila Retreat-labyrinth and outdoor stations, St Francis-courtyard, Sts Cyril and Methodius-memorial to unborn children, St Bernadette and St Michael statues of name saints

May 2007

  • Walk through of spaces being considered by the Committee
    • Sanctuary
    • Baptistery
    • Atrium
    • Outside the Church
    • Mary Chapel
    • Parish Offices
    • Signage around the compound
  • Members given assignments to visit and photograph churches during the summer
    • How do churches express the identity of their saint?
    • What would and would not work in our church?
    • What is your impression when you enter the church?  What impression do we want to give when entering St Raphael?

April 2007

  • Discussed resource materials and budget
  • Shared images of the Holy Spirit and St Raphael (copies in ALEC binders)
