2010 Youth Mission Trip Reflections

Through your generosity and expressions of support, 13 high school parishioners were able to spend a week serving the elderly, the disabled, and the poor in and around Charlotte, NC. They worked side by side with youth from Indiana, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Going to the Catholic HEART Work Camp gave the teens an opportunity to live a week of fellowship, faith, hard work, prayer, and service to others. Many of them could not have had such a spirit-filled, life-changing experience without support of the parishioners of this parish. Here’s what a few had to say about the experience many of you made possible:

“One of the things I learned on the Mission Trip was to appreciate what you have and do not waste resources. On the Mission Trip, I saw God through all of the positive attitudes the campers had and their determination to work.” Katie Lee  “One of the best things about Mission Trip was that I got to meet Catholics from all across the country. I felt a great bond with these other youth, and I learned more about myself through them. It made me truly proud to be Catholic.” Sophie Sherman

“The best part about mission trip was spending an entire week with teenagers who all are Catholic. Being able to learn from their experiences and hear about their struggles and rewards with their faith were inspiring and relatable. One of the things I learned on the Mission Trip was to not take anything for granted. So often, I get wrapped up in being successful and running a busy life schedule. The Mission Trip allowed me the time to self-reflect, to slow down, and to realize how truly blessed I am.” Lauren Brand  “Mission Trip was awesome! I really enjoyed meeting all the youth from around the country who were all coming together to help others. I learned that it's a whole lot easier to be motivated to do work when the people around you are motivated.” Laura Owczarski

“For me, the most rewarding part about going on Mission Trip was that we were given the opportunity to touch someone’s life. Often, it seems that we spend our days thinking only of ourselves. On Mission Trip, the focus is not on you, but on others and on God. It is a great time of self-reflection and examination. Something that I learned on Mission Trip is that you do not have to go to another country or another continent to find need. We went to Charlotte, in the same state as us, and we had plenty of work. Going on Mission Trip, for me, was a change in perspective. When you’re on the trip, your eyes are forced to be open, and your vision becomes clear. You see the needs of others, but more than that, you see God in those around you.” Hannah Hribar
