You have probably heard it said, “The youth are the Church of tomorrow!” Although this statement is undoubtedly true, as today’s youth will ultimately become the leaders of tomorrow’s Church; when looked at only from this perspective, it may cause some in our Church to unconsciously overlook, not include, or forget that the youth are very much the Church of today as well! Sadly, if we do not recognize and act on this reality we will not have to worry about the youth being around long enough to take the reins or even be a part of the “Church of tomorrow”.
Fortunately for our parish community the Holy Spirit appears to be guiding us in avoiding this pitfall of overlooking or forgetting our youth. In the recent Pastoral Council survey, many in our community shared their desire to better serve the youth in our parish. And, if that was not enough, the Holy Spirit sent us a second sign through the Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs), the four focus areas established by the Jesuits to guide their work. One of these four Apostolic Preferences is namely to Journey with Youth. In other words, what we are hearing is that we must acknowledge that the youth are here and address their needs today.
Motivated by our parish survey responses and encouraged by the UAP, this year we would like to provide more opportunities for our middle and high school youth:
Service opportunities including intentional partnerships with parish ministries and service projects
Planned “drop in events”, movie nights, game nights, and open gym times to build community and fellowship among the youth
Seasonal and topic driven Retreats
Eucharistic Adoration and prayer and worship experiences
Opportunities for youth to serve in peer leadership roles
Collaboration with other Jesuit parishes in the region
Mission Trip (Summer 2024)
In order to be able to make all of these goals and desires for our youth a reality we need today’s adult Church to truly answer the call to serve the young people of our community. There are a myriad of ways in which you may use your talents and gifts to help provide these opportunities for our youth:
Serve as an adult presence at one of the scheduled services or drop in events
Volunteer to serve on one of the Retreat planning teams
Join the existing Middle or High School Youth Ministry Lifeteen Core Teams to assist in implementing the weekly Youth Ministry gatherings
Serve as a chaperone for the Summer 2024 Mission Trip
Assist in one of the many administrative roles needed to support the overall Youth Ministry efforts
If you are feeling called to support the youth in our community contact Leo Moreda at [email protected] or Linda Lenzmeier at [email protected]. Let us together build a strong foundation for tomorrow’s Church by walking with, engaging and empowering today’s young Church.
